Bring Joy Back Home

Do you remember Joy?

For a brief 18-month period in the 1990s, Joy graced the corner of Stanley and Yurong Streets in Darlinghurst. In 2000, Joy was relocated to Macquarie University.

Created by sculptor Loui Fraser as a tribute to women and to the history of East Sydney, Joy was the world’s first statue of a sex worker.

The memory of Joy has attracted the attention of academics, writers, activists, poets and musicians.

With strong support from sex workers, their allies and representative body SWOP NSW, we are working to bring this historically significant sculpture back home to Darlinghurst.

Our city needs more statues of women. Especially ordinary, hard-working women.
