Sydney Labor welcomes State Government focus on electric transport
City of Sydney Labor has welcomed the State Government’s announcement today that all ferries will be electric within five years and trains to achieve zero net emissions by 2025. zero net emission trains by 2025.
Councillor Linda Scott and City of Sydney Labor released its own environment policy last week with a strong focus on converting the City’s fleet to be wholly electric and providing more public charging stations throughout the City’s suburbs.
Councillor Scott said the news the State Government would transition to electric transport was welcome and it is time for other levels of government and the community to get on board.
“The City of Sydney should be leading the nation in the important transition to create more sustainable transport options, but unfortunately we’re stuck in the past, trialling small numbers of vehicles and not supporting the public charging stations our communities are advocating for,” Councillor Scott said.
“That’s why City of Sydney Labor has committed to transitioning all Council vehicles to electric, and enabling charging station options to be available throughout our City to support residents and businesses to transition to electric vehicles wherever possible.
“It’s so important for our residents and businesses to walk, cycle or take public transport wherever possible. However, we know there are people in our community, particularly those undertaking shift work or those who require cars for mobility purposes, will continue to require cars.
“We need to ensure the City is enabling electric and zero emission options for them to transition to a more sustainable future.
If elected to the City in the September, Labor will deliver a rapid transition of the City’s entire Council fleet to electric vehicles by 2025 and increase EV charging infrastructure in car share spaces and key public locations. Net emissions will be zero by 2030 and the City will be greener and more liveable under an Environmental Policy released last week.
“Great cycleways and shared pathways, sustainable public transport links that connect communities and private electric cars well go a long way to creating a liveable city and Labor is committed to making that happen,” Councillor Scott said.
